The Journey of Johanna Kasengo: A Story of Perseverance from Otjiurunga.

In the vast and culturally rich landscape of the Kunene Region lies a remarkable community known as Otjiurunga, a united village that stretches across approximately 40 kilometres. This great village is not a single settlement, but a powerful collective of interconnected communities, including Okoungumabati, Otjisokotjongava, Okarukoro, Ozohungu, Okozonḓu, Okatutura, Ovinjange, Oukongo, Okandombo, Otjirumbu, Okoupaue, Otjongoro, Otjijombo, and Okahazu. Beyond these, smaller settlements such as Okomize, Okandiikarera, Okozohongo, Orokasoko, Okamburu, Okazembua, Okandindiri, and Okozondje further reflect the breadth and unity of Otjiurunga.

Together, these villages form what is proudly known as Otjiurunga, a symbol of shared identity, resilience, and cultural strength. It is from this deeply rooted community that a remarkable story of determination and achievement emerges: the story of Johanna Kasengo.

Johanna Kasengo hails from one of the smaller yet significant parts of Otjiurunga, known as Okatutura kaTjiurunga. Her journey is not merely personal; it represents the aspirations of an entire community. In the current era, an era I refer to as that of the Himbacracy Philosopher, her success marks a historic milestone. She becomes the fourth registered nurse from Otjiurunga to graduate in this generation, and notably, the second female nurse from the community to obtain a Bachelor Honours Degree in Nursing Science from University of Namibia.

Johanna’s story begins in Opuwo, where she was born and later nurtured within the cultural environment of Otjiurunga. She started her early education at Opuwo Primary School in 1992 and completed her Grade 12 at Mureti High School in 2005. Like many young people from rural communities, her path to higher education was not immediate. Instead, it was marked by perseverance, patience, and resilience.

After completing her secondary education, Johanna remained in Opuwo, navigating the uncertainties that often follow school completion. Determined to improve her academic standing, she enrolled with NAMCOL to upgrade her Grade 12 results. During this period, she also pursued a six-month training course in hospitality, specialising in cleaning services. Despite the modest nature of this opportunity, and the personal financial commitment it required, Johanna approached it with seriousness and dignity.

Upon completing her training, she was sent for job attachment at Opuwo State Hospital in 2007. What followed was a defining chapter in her life. In 2007, Johanna worked voluntarily at the hospital, demonstrating extraordinary commitment without formal employment. In 2008, her dedication was recognised when she was offered a position as a cleaner at the hospital. She served in this role for seven years, gaining not only work experience but also deep exposure to the healthcare environment.

It was within these hospital walls that her purpose began to take shape.

In 2014, Johanna applied to the Ministry of Health Training Centre to pursue nursing studies. Her application was successful, and in 2015 she began her training as an enrolled nurse at Keetmanshoop. Over two years of rigorous study, she laid the foundation for her professional career. By 2018, she had qualified and started working as an enrolled nurse at Opuwo State Hospital, serving her community with dedication until 2021.

However, Johanna’s vision did not end there.

Driven by a desire to grow academically and professionally, she made a bold decision to further her studies. At this critical moment, she reached out to me, the Himbacracy Philosopher, seeking guidance on how to pursue higher education. I did not create her story; rather, I became a witness and supporter of her journey. Like many others from Otjiurunga, she placed her trust in my academic guidance, and together we mapped a path forward.

Johanna enrolled at the University of Namibia to pursue a Bachelor Honours Degree in Nursing Science, a demanding four-year programme. Through discipline, sacrifice, and unwavering commitment, she successfully completed her studies.

Today, her achievement stands as a beacon of hope.

Johanna Kasengo’s journey is different not because it was easy, but because it reflects the reality of many who rise from humble beginnings through persistence. From a voluntary worker to a cleaner, from an enrolled nurse to a graduate with an honours degree, her path is a powerful reminder that success is not always immediate, it is built over time.

As part of the Otjiurunga United community, her accomplishment is not hers alone; it belongs to every village, every household, and every young person who dares to dream beyond their circumstances.

Congratulations to Johanna Kasengo for this remarkable achievement. Your success is not only a personal victory but a legacy for Otjiurunga. May your journey inspire many others to follow in your footsteps, to believe in the power of education, and to rise, no matter where they begin.

Written in honour of Johanna Kasengo’s journey, to inspire the people of Otjiurunga and beyond.
